How to Ride Metro Area Transit
This page is designed to provide you with
all the basic information you need for your next trip on a Metro Area
Transit bus. Our customer service representatives are available to provide
you with additional assistance. You can reach them
at 701-232-7500.
Services available:
Paratransit:
Paratransit complements the fixed routes by providing door-to-door service.
Paratransit use is limited
to people with disabilities unable to independently use the fixed route system.
The
number of paratransit vehicles in service on any given day varies from 6-8.
Wheelchair Accessibility
All MAT buses are
equipped with wheelchair lifts or ramps. The driver will secure wheelchairs
inside with tie-downs before the bus departs. A brochure is available
explaining the driver’s and passenger’s responsibilities related to
wheelchairs.
Call the MAT Helpline at 701-232-7500 for specific information on
which routes are accessible, or to receive a paratransit brochure. You can also
download a pdf of the paratransit
brochure.
Bike Racks
MAT buses are equipped with bike racks. A permit must be obtained before using
the bike racks. For more information call the helpline or download a pdf of our brochure

MAT Fixed Routes
Fixed routes form
the backbone of the MAT system. On fixed routes, buses follow the same
(‘fixed’) path repeatedly. MAT fixed routes are color- and number- coordinated,
such as Purple Route 11 or Blue Route 2.
Selecting your fixed route:
In
addition to being available on this Web site, route maps and schedules for
Fargo and Moorhead
are
available from several locations and on all MAT buses. In Fargo, stop by the
Ground Transportation Center (GTC), West Acres Transit Hub, and the NDSU
Memorial Union.
In Moorhead, stop by the transit display located within the
Moorhead Center Mall. Downloads of these maps/schedules are available above. Schedules are available on cassette tape. To request a tape call 701-232-7500
(voice/TDD)
Our route maps
include the times that the buses stop throughout the city.
They show the Fargo system on one side and the Moorhead system on the other. Identify the bus
route that's closest to your starting point and the one closest to your
destination. Major locations are printed on the top of each timetable to
help you find your starting and ending points. Next, use the timetable on the map to plan your departure. If
you will be traveling on more than one route, you will need to transfer.
Waiting for and identifying your bus:
MAT buses stop on corners and at bus shelters along their route. If there
are no corners or shelters at your stop, wait in a driveway. On Moorhead
routes 1 and 2, you must wait at a bus stop sign.
Please be at your bus stop five
minutes early. Make sure the bus driver can see you and wave to let the
drier know you want to ride. If you're inside a shelter, step out before you
wave.
Please stand back from the curb until the bus comes to a complete stop. If
you are in a wheelchair, stay back 5 feet to give the ramp room to deploy.
You'll find the route number on the front and side of the bus; check this
number to make sure you're boarding the correct bus. This is important
because several routes use the same street.
Boarding the bus:
Wait for exiting passengers to step off the bus
before you get on board.
Most MAT buses have the ability to "kneel"; this
means the front of the bus can lower to the curb to make your first step
easier. Let the driver know if you need this assistance. After paying your
fare, please be seated. We ask that you leave seats in the front of the bus
for senior citizens and people with disabilities.
