Fargo sees large rise in number of bus riders

FARGO, N.D. (March 17, 2008) – Bus business is booming in Fargo so far in 2008. Metro Area Transit (MAT) has experienced a 28 percent increase in the number of riders in Fargo since the year began. In January and February, MAT carried 241,196 passengers on its Fargo routes, up from 185,292 during the same period in 2007.

High gas prices surely receive some of the credit for the increase in riders on MAT. Customers can buy a 30-day bus pass for just $35, which is less than it costs to fill up a car with gas one time. But Fargo Planning and Development Director Jim Gilmour sees other explanations as well.

“We greatly improved service to the shopping areas on 13th Avenue South in late 2007,” Gilmour said. “Since then, we’ve seen a 66 percent jump in ridership on Route 15, which was extended to serve Wal-Mart and offer a more direct connection to the West Acres Shopping Center. The fact this route is now available every 30 minutes instead of every 60 makes it easier than ever for shoppers to reach their destinations.”

A third factor in MAT’s increasing passenger load is the number of Fargo college students using the bus system; this number is up 37% in 2008 when compared to January/February 2007 statistics.

MAT’s routes are especially convenient for people traveling to and from the NDSU, downtown and West Acres areas. Those who don’t want to purchase a 30-day pass can pay $1 per ride instead. To learn more, visit matbus.com or call 232-7500.

Introduction of NDSU new bus information Kiosk

N
DSU President Joseph Chapman unveiled Metro Area Transit’s first bus information kiosk on March 10th, 2008.  The kiosk, placed in the NDSU Memorial Union shelter, will enable students to visually locate the two NDSU circulator buses and track their arrival times.  Utilizing state-of-the-art GPS technology, this project is a joint venture between NDSU, the City of Fargo, and Metro Area Transit.  Renee Lura of the City’s IT Department is the Project Manager.
